New Research Connects Gynecologic Surgeries With Higher Stroke Risk

What the Study Found

New research shows a strong link between hysterectomy stroke risk, raising important concerns for women considering surgery for fibroids.

A review combining results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and over a dozen studies found:

  • Women who had a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) were more likely to experience a stroke compared with women who did not.

  • Removal of both ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy) was also tied to higher stroke risk, even if the uterus was not removed.

As a result, experts recommend that women who undergo these surgeries receive close monitoring and early screening for long-term health issues.

Why This Matters for Women’s Health

For many years, hysterectomy has been one of the most common surgeries for women with fibroid symptoms. However, stroke is a leading cause of disability and death among women. These new findings suggest that choosing surgery could increase the chance of serious health problems later in life.

The authors of the study emphasized that women with a history of hysterectomy or ovary removal should receive regular follow-up and proactive care to lower their risk.

Safer Alternatives to Surgery

At North Star Fibroid Clinic, we believe women should know all their options. Fortunately, major surgery is not the only way to treat fibroids.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)

UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that treats fibroids without removing reproductive organs.

Benefits of UFE include:

  • Outpatient procedure (go home the same day)

  • No incisions or general anesthesia

  • Recovery in days, not weeks

  • Fertility may be preserved

  • No increased stroke risk

Our board-certified interventional radiologists perform UFE using advanced imaging to block the blood supply to fibroids. This causes fibroids to shrink and symptoms to improve—without the need for hysterectomy.

Making Informed Choices

This research highlights something we strongly believe: surgery is not the only solution. Women deserve safe, effective treatments that protect their long-term health.

At North Star Fibroid Clinic, we design personalized care plans that go beyond symptom control and focus on overall wellness.

Explore Your Options

If your doctor has suggested hysterectomy for fibroids, consider getting a second opinion. UFE may be a safe and effective alternative.
