How to Prepare for Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
A Step-by-Step Guide
Are you scheduled for a Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) procedure? At North Star Fibroid Clinic, we want every patient to feel informed, supported, and confident heading into treatment. This minimally invasive, non-surgical option offers relief from fibroid-related symptoms like heavy periods, pelvic pressure, and bloating—with a much shorter recovery time than traditional surgery.
To ensure the best experience and results, here’s everything you need to know about how to prepare for UFE.
What Is UFE?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization is an image-guided procedure that blocks blood flow to fibroids, causing them to shrink and symptoms to improve. It’s a highly effective alternative to hysterectomy or myomectomy, especially for women who want to preserve their uterus.
Best of all, UFE is widely accepted by most major insurance providers.
Because it’s a well-established, FDA-approved treatment backed by strong clinical evidence, the vast majority of insurance plans—including private carriers and Medicare—cover UFE when medically indicated. At North Star, our team will verify your benefits and guide you through any prior authorization or referral requirements so you can focus on your health, not the paperwork.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) Prep Instructions
Proper preparation helps ensure your procedure is safe, smooth, and stress-free. Follow these steps carefully in the days leading up to your appointment:
1. Manage Medications
-
Stop NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) two days before the procedure—unless your doctor instructs otherwise. These medications can increase bleeding risk.
-
Start antibiotics if prescribed. Some patients will begin a prophylactic antibiotic the morning of UFE to reduce the risk of infection.
-
Bring a complete list of medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies, on the day of your procedure.
2. Fasting Requirements
-
Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your procedure. This includes water, gum, mints, and lozenges.
-
If you take important daily medications (like for blood pressure), your provider may allow you to take them with a small sip of water.
3. Dress for Comfort
-
Wear loose, two-piece clothing to allow easy access to your femoral artery (in the upper thigh/groin area).
-
Leave jewelry and valuables at home.
4. Plan for Your Recovery
-
Arrange a ride home: You will receive moderate sedation and won’t be able to drive yourself.
-
Rest for 24 to 48 hours post-procedure. Plan to relax at home, take pain medications as directed, and limit physical activity during this time.
